Alright, let's begin.
Track 1: Since We've Been Wrong
This song, has mystery and emotion. Definitely makes a good starting song for an album. The whole song is a build up to the end, which is amazing. But it's not so fast paced like other volta songs. It's awesome because they focuses a lot more on the singing. Which you can obviously hear when you listen to his beautiful new singing style/old singing style. It's a great song, the ending just makes the song completely.
Track 2: Teflon
Why did they name their song after the non-stick coating of your frying pans? No clue. But this is an amazing song. Again, not so much fast passed but its really interesting because Thomas is keeping rhythm with the bass and snare, while he hits the Splash Symbol at random times. It has much more vocal focus which is amazing, plus a really neat second chorus like bridge thing which is awesomely catchy. "Let the wheels burn, let the wheels burn, stack the tires to the neck with the body inside." It's definitely a rock song, not so much like their older stuff, really different, but still great.
Track 3: Halo of Nembutals
This song is more rocky too. It's got some interesting vocal melodies which sound kind of like Coheed and Cambria in some parts. Other times it seems like Frances the Mute Singing. Then he goes all Bedlam singing on your ass and its like BAM. It's really a fun song.
Track 4: With Twilight As My Guide
This is an acoustic song, featuring some weird vocal melodies that again, seem more rock than Volta. Yet it all still fits perfectly. It really makes you take a second look at The Mars Volta. It's really weird. Cedric has REALLY been practicing with his voice. Like oh my god...
Track 5: Cotopaxi
This is a faster song on the album. It has some Deloused roots in it along with some Bedlam in their too. Which really makes it cool to listen to. The more I listen to it, the more I fall in love with it. It brings some Deloused roots into it. Which just makes me smile. Gotta love Deloused man. And it has a really cool part to it, that I can't even explain. But just before that cedric does from Frances style singing. Which is totally epic.
Track 6: Desperate Graves
This song is building on me. It's cool because it has this vocal line, that goes into a really new style of Chorus. Like it's a twist to the Deloused style. Which makes me happier because Deloused was amazing. The Verses are really weird, its like this light guitar melody with Cedric doing lead, and Echoed drums! It's weird, yet awesome.
Track 7: Copernicus
This is the one song which features Cedric using a Vocoder. THE ONE SONG. In past albums it was almost all x] This song has a really emotional vocal melody, its not like any mars volta melody I've ever heard before. In fact, its a totally different song period. I've never heard the mars volta do anything like this, its really strange. But you know, it does have that part where it gets quite and a build up occurs. But GUESS WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE BUILD UP? You will die in shock.
ELECTRONIC DRUM BEATS. Mixed on a computer. I was like WHAAAAAAT!!!??
It's really good, but its really surprising. It really changes my views on the Mars Volta, I don't see them as the Mars Volta I used to. I see them in a totally different light now. And if your thinking, "Oh Ilyena has an electric drum beat in the beginning" NONONONO You have to hear this. This is like something Radiohead would use man. (This also features piano riffs) (get ready to shit your pants)
Track 8:
Kay I will continue this later I'm tired. But my overall review:
This was quite a shock. I never thought I would hear such things come out of The Mars Volta. It is really surprising. But I love this album! It is everything I wanted to hear + more! It has deloused roots in some songs which really makes it special. Because Deloused was hands down, the best Mars Volta Album. I should have known it was going to be different when Omar said the next album was going to be "Acoustic" but I never suspected this. I am quite happy with this album, it features some new styles which really grab your attention.
EVERYONE: You will love this Album. If you didn't like the mars volta before, you will now. And for Volta lovers, get ready. Because this album will blow you away. I bet you can't wait for the CD release on the 23rd? x]
Naah. You can actually listen to most of these songs on their myspace.
